ARTIST
Koren Der Harootian (1907-1992) was an Armenian artist and sculptor. As a young man, Koren, a natural-born artist, was encouraged and supported by his mother and sisters. The family had all fled Kharpert, Historic Armenia, during the Genocide after their husband/father was tortured and murdered. In 1921 they settled in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Koren attended Worcester Art Museum School. During summers he went to live among artists in Provincetown on Cape Cod. Later in life, Koren took up sculpting, for which he became internationally known.

Photographed in 1929, by K. S. Melikian, Koren is posed ready to put finishing flourishes on his watercolors---sailboats, sand dune, and Cape Cod houses. His sister Marion, who opened Marion's Beauty Salon the following year, was his stylist.
